Washington DC native, CHAD CARTER, developed an interest and appreciation for music at an early age. Chad's first instrument
was the viola; he played in the DC Youth Orchestra and had his first pubic performance at age seven. A year later he took up
the piano. Chad's first piano teacher was exceptional, however, his teacher soon relocated. Despite numerous attempts, Chad
did not get back to the piano. However, Chad continued to be exposed to music at home. Over the years Chad has felt a calling
to get back to the arts, especially musically.
After attending Howard University undergrad and Carnegie Mellon for graduate school, Chad found his way back to the music in 1998. This interest was heavily rekindled and based in jazz through The Ronnie Wells and Ron Elliston workshop for jazz vocals. Since then, he has performed at various venues such as: Vicino's, The Smithsonian Jazz Cafe, Blues Alley, One Step Down, Vaness Station, Utopia, Bohemian Caverns, Twins Lounge, the FMJS Y2K Quarterly Concert and The DC Improv, East Coast Jazz Festival, LaPorta's. In these venues Chad has worked with Aaron Graves, Bootsie Barnes, Buck Hill, Fred Hughes, Nasar Abadey, Mike Bowie, Steve Novosel, Ronnie Wells, Ron Elliston, Ricky Loza, Hod Obrien, Paul Wingo, Luis Hernandez, John Jensen, Frankie Addison, Ron Compton, Wade Beech, James "Tex" King, Wes Biles, Cheyney Thomas, Alfredo Mojica, Jr., and Chris Grasso to name a few.
In 2000, he made an East Coast Jazz Festival debut, performing a tribute for jazz great and vocalist extraordinaire, Mr. Ernie Andrews. Carter was able to meet Andrews because of another extraordinary vocalist, Ms. Ronnie Wells. Ms Wells is Carter's teacher and mentor and has guided him into this musical journey. Along with Ronnie Wells and Ernie Andrews, other influences include: Johnny Hartman, Little Jimmy Scott, Billy Eckstine, Carmen, Betty and "Old Blue Eyes" Frank Sinatra. Although Carter feels he’s had a fulfilled life, the love of jazz has made it that much better. Through growing, Carter hopes to share the gift of jazz with music lovers everywhere.
You can catch Carter regularly on Monday nights at Vicino Italian Restaurant in Silver Spring Maryland.
Carter is not featured every Monday but has a camio appearance on most shows.
